Superman 3.0? Beta Testing Starts Now!

Posted by Jared On February - 10 - 2010

Superman 3.0 is actual movement towards a Superman Reboot!

A Warner Bros insider states “It would definitely not be a follow up to Superman Returns." Making it like it never happened. Sorta like the Ang Lee Hulk of 2003.

Here's the latest press release from the Warner Bros on the subject:

"EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros is trying to ready its DC Comics stalwart Superman to soar again on the Big Screen, and the studio has turned to Chris Nolan to mentor development of the movie. Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a "godfather" role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus. Nolan's leadership of the project can set it in the right direction with the critics and the fans, not to mention at the box office. Besides, Nolan is considered something of a god at and has a strong relationship with Warner Bros after the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Though he wasn’t obligated to do so, he gave the studio first crack at his spec script Inception, and Warner Bros was able to buy it before other studios even got a sniff. While Nolan completes that Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer for a July 16th release, he's also hatched an idea for Warner Bros' third Batman installment. Now his brother and frequent collaborator Jonah Nolan, and David Goyer who co-wrote Batman Begins and penned the story for The Dark Knight, are off scripting it."

This is Bitter/Sweet news for Superman fans. It means they are taking real steps to make the movie but at the same time forgetting 'Returns' ever happened.

This guy was almost Superman..seriously

Posted by Jared On January - 27 - 2010

Matthew Bomer is currently impressing audiences as conman-turned-FBI agent Neal Caffery in the "White Collar" television series, but there was a time not too long ago when he was primed to bring a far more familiar character to the big screen as the star of what eventually became "Superman Returns."

Before Bryan Singer took over "Superman Returns," Brett Ratner had been tagged as the project's director and cast Bomer as Kal-El. Ratner left the project in 2003, and the role of Superman was re-cast and given to Brandon Routh when Singer was named the new director. So, when Bomer dropped by MTV HQ to discuss "White Collar," we had to ask him what it was like to be Superman — even for just a little while.

Waiting for Superman, takes an even wider look at how we in America educate our children.

Or, more specifically, how we've generally failed to educate our children.

Equal parts sickening, fascinating, and inspiring, Waiting for Superman (the title refers to a child's dream of being rescued) takes firm aim at our national education system and asks a few simple but angry questions. Like, for example, how can one of the richest and most privileged countries in the world fail so resoundingly at educating its youngest generations? How long must our system fracture before someone comes up with a plan that actually works? Why do so many politicians promise education reforms … but practically never follow through? And, perhaps most importantly, what can a dedicated parent actually DO to help ensure their kids a legitimate and high-quality education?

Guggenheim makes his points by introducing us to all sorts of people who are directly affected by our floundering education system — and for the most part, it's just not pretty. We meet Washington D.C. Education Chief Michelle Rhee, who has some revolutionary new ideas on how to keep teachers happy and inspired … but the teachers' union doesn't like them. We get to know a small handful of great kids, all of whom seem smart and sweet and dedicated … oh, but there simply isn't enough room for those kids at the (relatively) local charter school.

And then there are the chalkboard heroes: the average hard-working educators who are sincerely and passionately dedicated to educating our young … who are constantly short on resources, egregiously underpaid, and unacceptably under-appreciated. One interview subject, a teacher named Canada, is so effortlessly inspiring and simply noble that he may inspire your own kids to become an educator. The only place a man like this can make a difference is in a charter school, which (obviously) has a rather high enrollment list, and therefore its pupils must be chosen by lottery.

Imagine being the low-income parent who must entrust her child's secondary education to a bunch of bouncing lottery balls. A country that spends billions on weapons but comparatively little on the education of our future leaders … well, you do the math. And Guggenheim captures it all: the overworked and well-intentioned teachers, the beleaguered bureaucrats, the desperate parents, and the confused kids. Waiting for Superman works well enough as a basic primer on how our education system got so damn broken in the first place, but it also offers some ideas and hopes for the future of American education.

Full of refreshingly honest insights and some powerfully upsetting statistics, the film seems angry and critical, but never hopeless. We'd like to think that every kid in America has his own fair shot at a strong education … but we know they don't. Not really. Movies like Waiting for Superman would like to change that.

On his website, Mark Millar had some encouraging things to say about "revamping Superman for a new generation (and YES, 30 somethings, that DOES mean an origin to explain where the Hell he came from to my daughter and her pals). Obviously, there's some legal shit to sort out but anyone who thinks Superman is gone is just plum crazy. Should we pursue this aggressively, especially given the buzz on Kick-Ass is just astronomical and Matthew is being offered pretty much anything he wants to do?

We had so much fun casting around on all this, just idle chats in the pub as we scribbled our notes. Imagine Daniel Craig as Lex Luthor, Clint Eastwood as Pa Kent, Daniel Day-Lewis and Julianne Moore as Jor-El and Lara. And the idea one of our production team had for Jimmy Olsen is just GENIUS! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. What do YOU guys think? You wanna see the Kick-Ass team REALLY go after Superman or develop something else?"

"I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers." MM

Superman cameo cut out of Green Lantern movie

Posted by Jared On January - 18 - 2010

MTV is reporting that director, Martin Campbell, has pulled the Superman cameo from the film. In fact, "None of the other DC characters will appear in the film," Campbell stated.

Back in July, Green Lantern writer Marc Guggenheim stated that there would be Clark Kent cameo similar to the Tony Stark moment at the end Hulk.

But as for right now, there is no Clark Kent and Green Lantern meet-up, and no new Superman movie either — just wishful thinking. Of course, we're coming up on the time when DC is supposed to be unveiling the projects of its newly formed movie production arm, so you never know.

What’s worse than Kryptonite?…

Posted by Jared On November - 27 - 2009

If you’re like me, you may have been asking yourself "Hey what ever happened to that Superman Sequel I’ve been patiently waiting for?" Well the good folks at the WB have been releasing statements about how the studio will NOT pursue a "Superman Returns" sequel anytime soon.

My sentiments exactly, Superman.

The project is currently on hold until the studio resolves all the legal issues with the heirs of the character’s creators. The goal is to settle with the Siegel and Shuster families, and then work out a deal with them to merge all the Superman rights.

Executives at Warners are eager to get a new "Superman" movie off the ground and have been gathering pitches that have been coming in. And even though the studio already lost the rights to Superman’s origins, after the merger, Warner Bros are likely to reboot the franchise, which will once again include the origins that we have seen hundreds of times.

Flicksnews.net has gotten behind a campaign for a director’s cut of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Notes the site, "Singer stated back when the film was released that the original cut was 2 hours and 45 minutes before the film was trimmed for its theatrical release.

A number of significant scenes ended up on the cutting room floor such as the Return to Krypton sequence, scenes with Ben Hubbard and Martha Kent, Kal Penn’s character’s dialogue was cut, an opening sequence with comic book opening similar to Superman: The Movie’s opening, Clark adjusting back to life on earth, young Clark growing up, and lots of dialogue and extended scenes that supposedly added to the film and gave it better pacing and beats." For more information, go to the official site for the campaign, HERE. Check out the trailer they’ve put together below:

Dark Superman Movie?!

Posted by Jared On August - 27 - 2009

If you ask one of the candidates to take the helm of the Superman Franchise, James McTeigue, how he feels about the Big Blue Guy he would probably say, "he needs to man up.” James McTeigue, the director of the upcoming Ninja Assassin spoke to MTV about the need for a darker Man of Steel to hit theaters. McTeigue is one of the many rumored successors to the DC film franchise, and he discussed where he thinks the character should go next.

McTeigue wouldn’t confirm or deny his involvement with a new Superman film, but he did voice his opinions about where he thinks the next film should go.

“I think that the culture has sort of changed a little bit around Superman. If you’re going to do something with Superman, I think people would probably like something a little darker. I think it’s good that they just had a court case where, basically, if you make another Superman movie, you can’t touch Superman growing up—that’s part of the story that you can’t touch any more. That wouldn’t be a bad thing. I think everybody’s a bit sick of seeing the origin story.”
The court case he’s referring to is the one that caused Warner Brothers and DC Comics to forfeit the rights of Superman’s origin story to the families of creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster. Legally they were obligated to have a film in production by 2011 in order to continue using the material for the character. As you know that didn’t happen, and now that part of his life is off limits.

Without the crutch of an origin story, where can Superman go? McTeigue says, ”You need to take it and retool it. Make it something that appeals to audiences now a little more.”

A clip from the MTV Interview can be seen below

Superman Goes to Court, Again!

Posted by Jared On August - 15 - 2009

Yet another thing Superman and I have in common! ;)

If you haven’t heard or been following the case lately, Let me sum it up for you. The whole court case is really to determine how much money Warner Bros. and DC owe the Siegel Family from profits they collected from Superman since 1999. And to make matters worse, copyright law will give the Siegel family full ownership of Superman in 2013. This is the date that matters, because after 2013, the Siegels could bring the property to other movie and television studios. So if Warner Bros wants to produce a new Superman movie before they are forced to pay major bucks for the rights, they will need to go into production by 2011."
