Richard Donner on Superman Returning (Again)

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 31 - 2010

MovieWeb recently caught up with Richard Donner while he was out promoting the 25th anniversary of The Goonies, which will debut on Blu-ray November 2nd. The director spoke about his disinterest in continuing to make films with the current Hollywood studio system, and that at this point in his career he only wants to focus on projects that he is passionate about and can produce independently. Here's what he had to say about the new Superman film:

DONNER: "No, they haven't even asked me to read it," he replied, "It's Warner Bros.," joked the director. We followed that up by asking Donner what he thought of the studio's choice to have visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder (Watchmen) take over the franchise? "Well, I think he could do a great job. You know he's certainly a good director and hopefully he's got a good handle on it," answered Donner.

"I mean I thought Bryan (Singer) did a wonderful job with the other film (Superman Returns). You could just do massive action and blow up stuff, but he chose to do the characters more, although he had some beautiful stuff in there. So I hope nobody tries to compete. I hope Zack doesn't try to compete and I don't think he's that kind of director. I don't think he's going to want to compete with the best effects out there. I'm tired of it already. I'm tired of those … what are those machines? Transformers! Really, I mean they were great but lets settle back people and focus on the characters. The characters in Superman are just wonderful." Superman comes to theaters in 2012. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.'

OMGG! (Oh My Granny Goodness!)

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 28 - 2010

The CW has just released the following images from the November 12th episode of Smallville entitled "Abandoned"

(The captions came from our sick and twisted peanut gallery of a staff we have here. Leave your comments/complaints in the usual spot.)

TESS: "Hey guys, How evil do I look now standing behind Granny?"

CLARK: "Ever get the feeling a hot assassin is right behind you?"

CLARK: What?! A bowl full of kryptonite?! I'm never coming to this house again for trick-or-treat!

Granny's Girls!

Whoah! This girl can't enter my nightmare anytime!

"Hey Granny, Show us your impression of Neo again from the first film!"

"This claw is cool, but I need to remember to only scratch my butt with my left hand when I'm wearing it!"

CLARK: "Hey! What did I just say?! Not in the face!!"

"Damn! My chi-garden stinks! Guess I'll just burn it up now."

GRANNY: "Why don't you come to visit anymore, Tess? I baked you some cookies!"
TESS: "What do you mean I wear trench coats too much?!"

GRANNY: "Tess can you help Granny soak her feet?" TESS: "Sorry, Granny! Gotta run!"

Mad Harriet to appear in Smallville

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 28 - 2010

E! Online gives us our first look at Lindsay Hartley as Mad Harriet on "Smallville". Lindsay, wife of Justin "Green Arrow" Hartley, will appear in "Abandoned", the November 12th episode.

Lindsay's character answers to Smallville villainess Granny Goodness, and being the good little minion she is, Harriet makes it her mission take Clark down. Sounds fun, right?

The only downside to her guest spot is that longtime fans of Justin and Lindsay won't get that onscreen Passions reunion they're hoping for (we know you're out there!), since she'll only interact with Tom Welling and a few other castmembers. Just not her hubby.

Jim Lee Talks Superman

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 27 - 2010

In an excerpt from the interview with MTV, Jim Lee reveals why Superman is the toughest character to draw:

MTV: Is there a character that you look back on and remember having a rough time with?

LEE: Superman is the hardest character to draw. There are a couple of things that make him difficult. He’s got a very simple costume, and doesn’t have the long cape like Batman. He’s not a character that is necessarily always in shadow, and he doesn’t have a mask. He has to be Superman. He has to be the most grand, the most idealized form at all times, so he has to look powerful, but he can’t look bloated.

His face has to look noble and handsome and rugged. It’s a war of subtleties. Every little change on that character makes a big difference in how he finally looks.

I think that I erase that character more than I draw that character, to be honest. He’s a character that doesn’t have the gloves, and doesn’t have the big boots, so you're really drawing sort of an idealized human form with a very simple costume. He’s got to be in a pose that suggests nobility. It's got to be a pose that suggests his idealized form, and it's tricky to do. Batman hunches over. He’s crouched and he’s in the shadows, so he’s in slightly more dynamic poses. Superman tends to stand very upright and he’s very symmetrical, and those are actually the most difficult poses for me to draw.

Smallville Spoilerz! [WARNING]:

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 26 - 2010

FanCast.com has a couple of SPOILERS for up-coming episodes of Smallville:

Do you have any spoilers about 'Smallville's "Harvest" or "Ambush" episodes?

As first tweeted live from the Episode 200 red carpet, Erica Durance told me that "Harvest " (airing this Friday) is "awesome." For one, she shared with a huge smile, "I get to wear a bonnet!" Why? Because the Halloween-themed storyline finds Lois and Clark – now both in the know about what each other knows – led to "a very strange Amish community," Erica said. "Basically, Lois is upset and she's trying to teach Clark a lesson, and that gets them both in the worst trouble imaginable."

Is there's any chance that Erica Durance and Teri Hatcher will interact on 'Smallville'?

Alas, no. The episode "Abandoned" strictly features Lois watching her passed-on mom via videotape. "I don't get the pleasure of physically shooting with Teri," Erica lamented when we spoke.

Will Anyone Else Return to Smallville?!

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 26 - 2010

We have learned that Tom Welling and the shows producers are practically begging the former Lex Luthor to return for the final season. Also, many fans would also like to see Martha and Lana return as well.

We got the details on all the potential returns courtesy of "Watch With Kristin" over at E! Online.

Any word on Michael Rosenbaum returning to Smallville?

"I wish! But not as much as the producers and Tom Welling wish. That's what I'm hearing from sources—that Smallville producers have asked him to come back for the final season, but so far, Michael has not signed on. I'm told Tom himself also reached out to ask (beg?) him, but again, so far, no dice. Who's got a plane that can skywrite? Let's get creative, people! In other spoilery (and related!) news I'm told that Tess is a ******. Any guesses on which letters fill in those six blanks?"

Will Kristin Kreuk or Annette O'Toole return to Smallville?

"I'm told there's nothing in the works right now on Kristin but Annette is likely to return. Tip: Don't forget to put gas in that skywriting plane before you take it out to skywrite all your Smallville casting pleas."

Some pretty interesting info there, but more intriguing is what exactly does ****** stand for? Luthor, perhaps!? Be sure to share your thoughts about that and the rest of this news in the usual place!

Clark is concerned about Lois' safety so he diverts her away from covering the Vigilante Registrations Act by suggesting she cover another story. After he comes clean with her, an angry Lois tells him that she can take care of herself, but when a flat tire strands their car in the middle of nowhere, their plans take a turn for the worse and Lois ends up in serious danger. Meanwhile, Tess (Cassidy Freeman) searches for a cure for Alexander (guest star Connor Stanhope), who is rapidly aging.

Ultimate Superman Makeover?

Posted by SOS Staff On October - 25 - 2010

Superman has changed greatly over the 72 years he's been around, and it looks like yet another version of the hero in red and blue is about to make a debut. This change even caught the eye of Katie Couric (CBS Evening News).

In an unending attempt to revitalize this iconic character, a series called Earth One is featuring Superman stories with a younger, more emotional persona.

The new Superman is being described as an “EMO” 21-year-old, and is a part of a re-imaging of several DC heroes as younger people in an attempt to gain new readers.

The Earth One series does not supplant the regular Superman titles, but runs concurrently.

The graphic novel featuring this new Superman is penned by veteran writer J. Michael Straczynski, and is highly anticipated.

“The Man of Steel is a conflicted 20-year-old who's trying to find his way in the world,” says Comics Cavern.

Haven Comics is saying, “…he bears “more of a resemblance to Robert Pattinson from the ‘Twilight’ movies than Christopher Reeve from the Superman films.”

“This has gotta be one of the most highly anticipated books of the year for nearly everybody,” writes The Third Eye Comics Blog.

Whatever your take on the Man of Steel, Superman is both iconic, changeless, and by way of off-shoot versions, also ever changing.

Years ago Superman died and came back in several versions, none of whom resembled the original.

No matter how many times he is split, cloned, killed, and reborn, there is always a traditional version of him that survives, somehow.

Clark finally told Lois the truth last Friday..

Whether it be in the comics, movies, or in this case television, when Clark Kent tells Lois Lane his true identity it's always a momentous occasion.  Great Job Smallville Writers and Producers!  You may have changed the continuity a bit, but still deliver great scene in the end!
